Synopsis:
Having been pulled off course by a strange and powerful force, the Tardis lands on a planet with a very thin atmosphere called Vortis. While the Doctor and Ian try to find the source of the strange force, Barbara becomes influenced by it through a gold bracelet she is wearing. Outside the Tardis, Barabara is captured by some Menoptera who free her from the influence she is under. While, at the same time, the Tardis is captured and taken away by the Zarbi, with Vicki still inside.
The Doctor and Ian are soon also captured by the Zarbi and find Vicki and the Tardis in the Carsinome where they also find The Animus, the source of the force. Here, they learn that Vortis is in the grip of a war between the Menoptera and the Zarbi. The two used to live in peace, but that was until the Animus came and began controlling the mindless Zarbi.
Ian meets a Menoptera called Vrestin and the two fall into an underground tunnel where they meet the Optera, living descendants of the Menoptera who see the Menoptera as Gods. Together, they persuade the Optera to help fight the Zarbi.
The Doctor soon realises that the Animus is using gold to influence people and soon works out how to counter the influence. But, while doing that, he accidently gives information away about the Menoptera Spearhead that is about to attack. Barbara and anopther Menoptera called Hroster learn that the menoptera weapons are useless against the Zarbi and escape, intending to warn the Menoptera Spearhead. But they fail to warn them in time and the Menoptera Spearhead is ambushed and destroyed by the Zarbi.
The Doctor and Vicki meet the Animus in person, a giant Spider-like creature and are made helpless by it's power. Ian, Barbara and the Menoptera then attack and, by using sheer Will-power, Barbara uses an Isop-tope weapon on the Animus and destroys it.
Free from the control of the Animus, the Doctor and his crew leave the Menoptera, the Optera and the Zarbi to live in peace on Vortis.

Possibly the worst Doctor Who episode of all time, if not the most irritating. One of the species (I'm pretty sure it's the silly-looking flying ones) make the most annoying eardrum deafening noise known to man. This sound is heard throughout all fo the episodes (possibly not the first episode) and I nearly lost my sanity.
